Understanding the words only (no cues and out of routine!)

• Mae’n bwysig i’r plentyn sylweddoli nad yw popeth yn digwydd ar yr un amser bob dydd (e.e. gall plenty trall gael gwers nofio  un prynhawn ond nid bob prynhawn; efallai eich bod wedi anghofio cael rhywbeth o’r siop ac yn gorfod mynd allan ar adeg anarferol). Yn y sefyllfaoedd hyn ni all y plentyn ddibynnu ar y drefn i weithio allan beth fydd yn digwydd.
• Ceisiwch leihau nifer y ciwiau ychwanegol (pwyntio, ystumiau) a roddwch; felly, er enghraifft, yn lle gwisgwch eich cot a’ch esgidiau yn gyntaf, efallai y byddwch yn dweud "Ewch i nôl eich cot" neu "Allwch chi nôl bag Mami?" . Os yw’r plentyn yn llwyddiannus, mae’r geiriau (‘cot’ neu ‘bag’) wedi cael eu deall.

• It is important for the child to realise that not everything happens at the same time every day (e.g. other children may have a swimming or music lesson one afternoon but not every afternoon; you may have forgotten to get something from the shops and have to go out at an unusual time). In these situations the child can’t rely on routine to work out what will happen.
• Try to reduce the number of additional cues (pointing, gestures) you give; so, as an example, instead of putting your coat and shoes on first, you might say "Go and get your coat" or "Can you fetch Mammy’s bag?". If the child is successful, the words (‘coat’ or ‘bag’) alone have really been understood.
